It is one of two sites that make up the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, alongside the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park.

The museum's Beaux-Arts building is a three-quarter-scale adaptation of the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris. Commissioned by Alma and Adolph Spreckels, it opened on Armistice Day, November 11, 1924, in memory of the Californians who died in the First World War.
